The Story of the little White Picket Fence

A Bed Time Story or Sermon Illustration.

Once upon a time there was a little White Picket Fence that was lovingly built and erected in front of an old couple’s cottage.

It was a beautiful little fence ….the kind you dream of when you get old. haha!

The old couple loved their little white picket fence, not only because it looked so pretty in a street of concrete rendered walls and fences  ……  but also it stopped children from falling over the edge and into the lower front garden.

One sad day an ‘Official’ looking lady came knocking on the door of the house in Celebration Place and said:

“Im sorry Sir but your white picket fence has got to come down because it is not legal in this estate.

It does not comply with the standard of the building covenant ”

The wife of the old man who lived in the cottage became very very upset at hearing this and said to the estate Official …… “Its not coming down and thats that!”

But you see her husband had signed a building covenant that must not be broken (just like a marriage covenant),  …… and so the next week sadly the little White Picket Fence was taken down much to the chagrin of the neighbours who were not impressed.

The old man and his wife were very sad and didn’t know what to do.

Time passed and the little White Picket Fence lay on it’s side in the back yard waiting to see how it could be useful again.

Sadly no one seemed to know what to do with it.

Some suggested it be sold on ‘Gumtree’ but that was not an option.

Because it had been hand made by a good friend ….. and besides it was too pretty to be sold to someone who may not care for it as they should.

One day the old lady who lived in the cottage got an idea of how to use the little White Picket Fence at the back of her house.

You see she couldn’t open her bedroom window because of a lack of privacy from neighbour’s eyes.

Whats more she had lived in North Queensland and was used to having open windows day and night.

Her old husband who came from South Australian never quite understood the way of Queenslanders!

Because in Adelaide every one shuts the windows and pull down the blinds in summer to keep the heat out or in winter the warmth in!

During the summer months it gets very hot, humid and glary in Queensland.

Thats why the old lady liked to keep her cottage windows open all the time, but needed some shade!

One day while she was praying and thinking, a thought came into her head.

I wonder if it was from the Holy Spirit?

It was an idea that no one else had thought of.

So she got a pencil and started to draw a picture of the White Picket Fence with Roses and flowers growing on it.

She then drew a picture of how she wanted the White Picket Fence to look outside her bedroom window.

Would you believe it? …..  after she had showed it to her old husband who was not much help ….. a kind retired pastor came and offered to build it for her.

It looks so nice standing guard in her little back yard.

One day it will have climbing red and yellow Roses and flowers growing all over it.

So the little White Picket Fence lives on ….. happily ever after!

The moral of the story is that when you are disappointed with things that happen, …… don’t get sad get creative and ask the Holy Spirit to help you.

You will be surprised how your disappointments can turn to joy’.

Learn to turn your sadness into Joy, just like the old lady who lived in the cottage with the little White Picket Fence.

    Well done Pastor Fred .

God loves us to be creative and this is a perfect example. I have always loved the idea of a white picket fence, but a high screen with roses growing on is such a practical expression of joy. You two are amazing people – greatly loved.
